Remembering Christ at Christmas | Print |  E-mail

We all look forward to the holiday food, the beautiful lights, and enjoying the company of our family and friends during the holiday season. But what makes this time of year truly special to Christians? How could we not find wonder in remembering the birth of that little baby?

If you were raised in a Christian home, I know you also have special memories of how your parents kept the birth of Christ at the center of your holidays. For me, those memories include my parents reading me the account of His birth from the book of Luke every Christmas Eve. It's a tradition that I kept with my own three children. I love remembering them cuddling on the couch with me while I opened the family Bible to read the remarkable account of Jesus' birth and how God protected Him from unspeakable dangers. It's a tradition that my three now share and enjoy with their own children.

Another tradition that I kept going was a small, worn manger scene that my mother put up during the holidays. She passed it down to me when my children were very young. They loved helping me with the display of the tiny baby on the hay, the angel on top of the manger and the other figurines that played key roles in our Saviour's early life. It brought out many questions about what each one did in the story of His birth and early days. We'd also sing carols that reminded us to praise Him during the holiday season.

My daughter was instrumental in adding another Christmas tradition not too many years ago. Our local congregation holds a Christmas Eve service and her example, inspired all of us  to go. It's a tradition that brings us so close together as a family. All three of my children, my eight grandkids and I, love the worship service with the singing of carols. I believe the wonder that I see in my grandchildren's eyes, renews my faith that God will remain the guiding force in all generations of my family. What an awesome thought!

But the small act of going to a Christmas Eve service did more than bring wonderful memories to my immediate family. Early in my daughter's marriage, she invited her in-laws to join us. Now they are regular church goers. God's promise that His Word will not come back void is one that I have seen happen because of one small invitation to a Christmas Eve service.

Our congregation recently added a new volunteer service that I know will bless many during the holidays and beyond. Anyone who wishes to, may sign up to help an older person with chores or projects that they aren't capable of doing. Perhaps that will be a new tradition that I add this year and one I can continue to do past the holidays.

How do you keep Christ at the center of your holidays? What traditions do you enjoy that reminds you of His holy presence? We'd love to hear from you!
